Posted July 28, 2009 from Mikhail Lutchman (UWI STAT St. Augustine)
"I attended the first sitting of the National Youth Assembly Parliament 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel today. This consisted of the elected youth members of Parliament of all constituencies debating a mock bill.
"An Act to engender the Principles of Regional, Economic and Political integration with special emphasis on Youth Employment and the creation of a Secretariat to facilitate these aims."
I was not a mere observer ... Members of Parliament who were present included the Hon. Gary Hunt and Paula Gopee-Scoon, Ambassador Joan Yuille Williams also passed through... This amazing experience was not only the perfect stage to see our future politicians in action, but an ideal opportunity to network with enthusiastic and exceptional individuals and promote UWI STAT as well. These youth MP's are in an ideal position to impact communities across the country by working with the official MP".

What is UWI STAT?
UWI STAT Ambassadors are the Vice Chancellor’s Student Representatives on all four UWI campuses. They are responsible for promoting their campus and the entire institution regionally and internationally. They encourage their student peers to "give back" to their campuses through the regional annual FOOTPRINTS: Students for Development programme and promote involvement in alumni relations, as well as "connectivity" and engagement with the respective campuses / institution via the UWI Alumni Association (UWIAA).UWI STAT Ambassadors strive to be leaders and companions to fellow students, alumni and the UWI community. They introduce students to the importance of alumni relations and loyalty and service, educate them about the UWIAA and the relevance of Caribbean cross-cultural integration, thereby cultivating in students the relevance of a life long relationship with The University of the West Indies. UWI STAT provides students with opportunities for integration with fellow Caribbean colleague. It encourages the development of leadership skills. It provides experiences that enhance their education and promotes regional “Pelican Pride” through involvement in campus, community and alumni activities.
Overview : UWI STAT was developed by the Director of Alumni Relations in the Office of the Vice Chancellor in 2005, in association with the Guild of Students of the three UWI campuses, in order to increase regional ties between students and alumni and create student awareness of alumni relations and alumni involvement. The official launch of the programme took place on January 23, 2006. Like other student organizations, it is registered with the Office of Student Services on all campuses. The three 2005- 2006 Guild of Students Presidents (Richard Toomer – Mona, Fallon Lutchmansingh - St. Augustine and Floyd Green - Cave Hill) are the founding members.

• Give service and exercise leadership in promoting the goals, aims and objectives of UWI STAT

advocate for and to educate their student peers

Summary
While the activities of the various campus Corps varies some what, The UWI STAT Corps has performed well regionally in the academic year 2008 -2009. We accomplished our goals on increasing awareness on HIV/ AIDS, regional integration and Pelican Pride. Volunteerism was an important pillar in this past year’s activities. The Corp collaborated with numerous NGO’s and UWI offices. As a student body we believe in The UWI and are committed to “Pelican Pride”. This commitment is institutionalized in the form of programs such as Foot prints but also a way of life, as daily we encourage students and alumni to support The UWI.
