The UWI Mona Campus now has an Engineering Programme. The Hon. Gordon Shirley OJ, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus has advised that, through the Electronics Unit in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science, Mona now has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering. He anticipates introducing additional programmes in 2010, focusing on areas like: energy management and engineering, biomedical engineering and renewable energy. He envisages the campus facilitating students for advanced placement in traditional engineering programmes such as power engineering, as well as mechanical and civil engineering.

Mona School of Business (MSB) is now a registered education provider under the Project Management Institute (PMI).

UWI graduate, Judge Patrick Robinson OJ, was re-elected to serve a new two year term as President of the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia, based in the Hague, Netherlands. He is also the author of the book "Jamaican Athletics - A Model for 2012 and the World". 
 
October 22, 2009
Professor the Honourable Gordon Shirley OJ, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal, UWI (Mona) received the 2009 Gleaner Honour Award for excellence in education on Oct 21, 2009 and was credited with steering the Mona Campus on to a transformational and modernised path. He was conferred with the Order of Jamaica on October 19, 2009.
- The new Vice President of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) for 2009/2010, Grantley Stephenson,is a UWI graduate. 

October 19, 2009 - The first Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Open Campus, Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald was inducted in St. Lucia on October 16, 2009. The inaugural Presentation of Graduates ceremony for the Open Campus took place on October 17, 2009. The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) was conferred on Mr. Dunstan St. Omer and the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) was conferred on Dr. Peggy Antrobus.

October 9, 2009 - Judith Gildharie-Mursalin graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School on the Principal's Honour Roll last week and has now also been awarded the Guyana Government prize for the best performance by a Guyanese student for the year 2009.    

October 5, 2009 - The former Prime Minister of Barbados and Ambassador Designate to the People's Republic of China, Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford is among four persons who will receive honorary doctorates from the UWI, Cave Hill Campus on October 24, 2009. Sir Lloyd is a diplomat, politician, educator and author and served as the fourth Prime Minister of Barbados. He holds the record of longest serving Minister of Education in Barbados as well. He served the University as President of the Student Guild (1958).

September 25, 2009 - The British Foundation for The University of the West Indies (BFUWI) was granted formal charitable status by the UK Charities Commission on January 7, 2009. A Cocktail Reception to mark the establishment of the BFUWI was held in London on September 25, 2009. The BFUWI will assist in ensuring sustainable funding for all four campuses of the UWI, with benefactor donations and corporate funding financing student scholarships, developmental projects, institutional strengthening and infrastructural support. It will raise financial and other material support through promotional and relationship building activities, principally in the U.K.


August 28, 2009 - The Mona Campus Culture and Heritage Bus Tour can be booked through the Business Development Office.  When visiting Kingston, Jamaica be sure to learn about the heritage of the UWI's first campus - the historical grounds, the artifacts and structures of cultural significance.

For the first time in history, 5 UWI students are on the West Indies Cricket Team.
